Travel writing

I have a proven track record with leading publications

Travel Photography-2.jpg

I’ve written travel stories for publications like Conde Nast Traveller, Travel + Leisure, Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, The New York Times’ India Ink, The Wall Street Journal’s SceneAsia, and CNN Travel, as well as several in-flight magazines in Asia, Europe, and New Zealand.

From 2007 - 2008 I had two regular columns for Metropolis, the most popular English lifestyle magazine in Tokyo at the time. One column was focused on health and wellness, while the other was all about non-profit organizations and inspiring local charities and people making positive change in the world.

I’m open to just about anything

When researching the impact of foreign aid on ethnic minorities, I stayed in a stilt house (in a part of Vietnam you could only get to by foot) with a government minder’s futon unfurled next to mine.

I've gone undercover as a hostess in a Tokyo club to research a story for the British magazine Glamour.

I’ve even bathed in live enzymes for a story.

My experience is broad and I’m always willing to try something new so I can write authentically.

Travel Books

I have contributed to travel books

I have contributed to several books including "Tokyo: The Complete Residents’ Guide" (Explorer Publishing), "To Japan With Love: A Travel Guide for the Connoisseur" (ThingsAsian Press), as well as "Sacred Places of a Lifetime" and "Food Journeys of a Lifetime" (both from National Geographic).

“Karryn was great to deal with, extremely knowledgeable and helpful when it came to queries about Tokyo, and always submitted on time for the deadlines. We would have no hesitation to work with her again or to recommend her.”

-Tim Binks, editor at Explorer Publishing

I’m Good with Tight Deadlines

I have turned around content under tight deadlines (like within 24 hours tight) when needed. I’m always flexible and adaptable to the needs of each editor/client.

“Karryn has many outstanding qualities. during the series' production, we really relied on her flexibility, quickness on her feet, and objective thinking as this was the inaugural series and things were changing all
the time.”

-Ai Uchida, co-founder of Spinshell Inc
(I penned the script and helped film weekly videos on Tokyo for Spinshell Inc)
